Kentucky Law has various categories regarding theft.  For example, there is Theft by Unlawful Taking, aka 'TBUT',  KRS ***.*** .  The dollar amount of the theft determines if this is a felony or misdemeanor offense.  If it is over $500.00, the theft is considered a Class D felony.  If it is under $500.00, the theft is considered a Class A misdemeanor. 

Shoplifting items is considered a 'TBUT'.  Shoplifting is an offense that store owners can detain the suspect until police officers arrive.  If a police officer is called to a store, TBUT Shoplifting under $500.00 is a misdemeanor offense that a police officer can arrest for, without witnessing the offense.
